Ultrasound Q&A
What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a noninvasive screening test that uses soundwaves to get an image of the inside of your body. The test causes no pain and uses no radiation, making it safe for a growing baby and your internal organs.
What happens during an ultrasound?
An ultrasound procedure requires no prior preparation, though for some exams, you may need a full bladder. During the ultrasound, a trained technician glides a wand (or transducer) across your pelvic region. They may apply slight pressure to the wand to get a better image of certain organs.
If Memorial Women’s Specialists needs a better image of your uterus, they may order a transvaginal ultrasound. The sterile wand is inserted vaginally, which may feel awkward but isn’t painful.
The wand emits soundwaves that bounce off internal tissue, your fetus, and organs and communicate back to a computer to create an image that’s interpreted by your OB/GYN.
Why would I need a gynecologic or obstetrics ultrasound?
When you’re pregnant, ultrasounds are a routine part of your care. They provide information about your baby’s development, orientation in the womb, and sex.
Women who are not pregnant may have symptoms that make an ultrasound necessary for diagnosis. These symptoms include:
- Irregular uterine bleeding
- Severe menstrual cramps
- Pelvic pain
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Suspected ovarian or uterine cancer
- Bloating and distension in the pelvic region
- Painful intercourse
An ultrasound can find ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids, but it cannot detect endometriosis.
When is a transvaginal ultrasound needed?
Memorial Women’s Specialists may recommend a transvaginal ultrasound to view your uterus and ovaries more clearly. A transvaginal ultrasound also gives them a better image of the uterine walls.
If you have symptoms that suggest small fibroids or adhesions of scar tissue, a transvaginal ultrasound can help make a diagnosis.
Can I get a 4D ultrasound of my baby?
A 4D ultrasound gives you a superior image of your growing baby. You can make out features and really get an idea of what your baby will look like when born.
While these are invaluable keepsakes offered by Memorial Women’s Specialists, 4D ultrasounds don’t replace traditional 3D ultrasounds used for medical evaluation.
To schedule an ultrasound or learn if it’s the right tool for you, call Memorial Women’s Specialists or book online today.
